Bryan Tuckey -President and CEO of Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) discusses one of home renovation's most frequently asked questions. Most home renovations especially those that involve major construction, alterations or demolition require a building permit. Permits help protect you, your home and your community by making sure your project is structurally sound and follows all regulations. Yet people too often question the importance of permits and sometimes they are tempted to undertake projects without having the required permits in place. An unprofessional renovator may be willing to take on your project without obtaining permits, and bypassing required permits may seem like a way to save time and money but it could very likely end up costing you a great deal.  Undertaking work without following the permit process could result in renovation deficiencies, substantial fines and having to redo work. Lack of required permits may affect your home’s insurance coverage and it could also lead to problems when you sell your home. Permits are issued by local municipalities and application processes and the rules governing building permits vary depending by where you live. A critical step in obtaining your permit is ensuring that your project complies with the Ontario Building Code, municipal zoning and other applicable laws. Getting a building permit can be a complicated process. It can take several weeks or even months to obtain and it can be a bit overwhelming, so a good approach is to work with a professional renovator who is experienced with permit applications. RenoMark™ professional renovators are very familiar with permits and they will guide you through the process. They will assess your project and explain whether or not a permit is needed and what it will take to get one, and they will work on your behalf to acquire any that are needed. As well, they will arrange for all inspections required under the permit. BILD created the RenoMark™ program in 2001 to help homeowners distinguish professional renovators from underground contractors.  A key feature of the program is the RenoMark™  Code of Conduct which all members agree to abide by. It mandates that they provide written contracts for all jobs, have at least $2 million in liability insurance and offer a minimum of two years warranty on all work. Find a RenoMark™  professional at If  you have questions about permits or the renovation process or you’re thinking about renovating be sure to attend one of our “Five Steps to a Successful Renovation” seminars. They have two experienced professional RenoMark™ renovators who will walk through the five essential steps to a renovation, offer helpful tips and answer questions from the audience. The educational sessions  are free and take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at BILD’s offices at 20 Upjohn Road in Toronto. There is one on May 16 and another on June 20. Our review of the Ninja Professional Blender + Recipe
Today’s product review is brought you courtesy of Canadian Tire, who provided with a  Ninja Professional Blender to review for our readers. In addition to a product review, today’s article will also feature a fun, healthy and family friendly recipe that makes the most of the Ninja Blender’s features.
The blender is priced at 189.99 MSRP and includes the following primary components:
  1. Motor Base +72 oz Main Pitcher
  2. Detachable Blade Component
  3. 2x Portable Ninja Cups with lids
This blender was incredibly easy to set up and use. It includes five different settings for use with either the main pitcher, the smaller Ninja cups, or both. These settings are succinctly explained in the instruction manual and also include an explanation of the types of foods and preparations that can be created under each setting, which I found particularly useful. Among the available settings includes a special Nutri Ninja © mode which is meant to blend whole fruits, vegetables and ice into nutrient-dense drinks. Considering we all could use more fruits and vegetables in our lives, I decided to put this mode to the test in creating today’s feature recipe a Tropical Smoothie Bowl (see end of article for full recipe). In creation my smoothie bowl, I found the blender to be incredibly sturdy (aided by suction cups on the motor base), powerful and easy to clean. It locked into place very well and the final product was as hoped for and expected. The portable Ninja Cups that come with the blender mean you can easily take your smoothies to go on a busy morning. Want to learn more about the product? Let’s take a closer look at some of specifics. Product Features
  • Ninja® Professional Blender features a powerful 1100 Watt motor
  • Extra large 72 oz blender pitcher
  • Total Crushing ® blades crush through ice and frozen ingredients in seconds
  • Jars, lids and blades are dishwasher safe and BPA free
Overall, I would describe this product as versatile, durable and easy to set and clean up. It certainly allows you to get creative in the kitchen too, take a look at the recipe below to see the fun-themed eieihome Tropical Smoothie Bowl that we came up with. The eieihome Tropical Smoothie Bowl ninja professional blender What You Need ¼ cup vanilla yogurt ½ cup kale 1 banana ½ cup frozen strawberries 1 tbsp. sunflower seeds ½ cup ice 2 tbsp water How We Prepared It It is easy as 1,2,3 really. We placed the ingredients in one of the Nutri Ninja cups, pressed the fruit/veggie specific Nutri Ninja © setting, and blended till smooth. The result was a perfectly blended smoothie with no unexpected chunks left in the mix. For anyone who has every blended kale, you know just how amazing it is to have a blender that breaks the tough leaves down with ease. Now, if you aren’t familiar with smoothie bowls, it is essentially a smoothie that you eat with a spoon. In addition to the blended fruit/veggie mix, various toppings are added to the bowl to take it from sippable to spoonable. For this recipe, we topped the smoothie bowl with sunflower seeds, fresh strawberries, and banana slices. If you don’t own a blender and are looking for an effective, easy-to-use tool to help you improve your fruit and vegetable intake this summer, try the Ninja Professional Blender, available at your local Canadian Tire, or online at!
